INTERVENTIONAL PAIN MANAGEMENT PHOENIX, AZ
Facet Joint Injections
Targeted, image-guided injections that may help reduce joint-related spine pain and improve mobility.
TREATMENT OVERVIEW
What is a Facet Joint Injection?
Your spine is made up of small joints, called facet joints, that help you bend, twist, and move comfortably. Over time, these joints can wear down from arthritis, injury, or simply everyday stress. When that happens, they can become painful, stiff, and inflamed—making it hard to move without discomfort.
A facet joint injection delivers medication directly into these joints to reduce irritation and calm inflammation. At Mountain View Headache & Spine Institute, with convenient clinics in Phoenix, Mesa, Scottsdale, and Peoria, Arizona, this treatment is one of the ways we help patients get moving again without relying on heavy medications or surgery.
WHEN MIGHT THEY HELP?
When Might A Facet Joint Injection Be Necessary?
Facet joint injections may be an option for individuals with joint-related spine pain, including:
Ongoing neck or back pain
Pain that worsens with extension, twisting, or prolonged standing
Joint pain related to arthritis (degenerative changes)
Persistent pain that hasn't improved with conservative treatments, such as medications or physical therapy
How Does the Procedure Work?
Evaluation
We’ll review your symptoms, medical history, and imaging to determine whether your pain may be coming from the facet joints.
Image Guidance
Using real-time imaging (fluoroscopy), your physician carefully identifies the targeted facet joint for precise needle placement.
Injection
A small amount of medication, which may include a local anesthetic and an anti-inflammatory corticosteroid, is injected into or around the facet joint.
Recovery
You’ll be monitored briefly after the procedure. Many patients can return to light activities the same day, depending on your physician’s instructions.
What Happens After The Procedure?
You may experience temporary soreness at the injection site or changes in your pain as the medication takes effect.
Your care team will provide instructions on activity, recovery, and follow-up care. Pain relief varies depending on your condition and individual response.
